World Kidney Day is observed on the second Thursday of March and it falls on March 13 every year. World Kidney Day is mainly observed to raise awareness about kidney-related diseases and infections and to spread some preventive measures among people .The kidneys play an important role in maintaining overall health. They filter out toxins, balance fluids and control blood pressure. The kidneys also ensure the proper functioning of the heart, brain and other tissues. Kidney related diseases are increasing day by day, especially in children and young adults. Although most people understand the importance of this vital organ, many people unknowingly harm their kidneys through their bad habits.

Ways to Maintain Kidney Health

For proper functioning of the kidneys, people are advised to maintain hydration by drinking water regularly which helps in flushing out the waste material and preventing the formation of kidney stones. Eight glasses of water is usually recommended daily as the pressure can be high but adjust this according to your individual needs and climatic conditions.

 Regulates Blood pressure

Another risk factor for kidney disease is high blood pressure. It should be around 120/80 mmHg. Individuals with healthy and proper kidney function should control salt intake and avoid processed food.

Avoid excessive use of Painkillers

Dependence and continued use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and aspirin as this can lead to a gradual decline in kidney function. Excessive use of the drug can lead to a decrease in blood pressure in the kidneys. Always consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

Balanced diet

To keep your kidneys healthy, eat a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat proteins. Avoid foods that contain excess salt and sugar. Switch to potassium-rich foods, such as bananas and spinach, to support normal kidney function.

Exercise regularly

The most effective way to keep kidneys healthy is physical exercise which balances body weight, works directly on you and reduces the chances of getting menstruation and heart diseases. If time is limited then people can engage in light exercises like walking, swimming or yoga for a minimum of 30 minutes daily which helps in improving overall kidney health.


Monitor blood sugar level

High blood sugar is not good for the kidneys and it can lead to diabetes. Regular monitoring of glucose levels is necessary for a person suffering from diabetes or pre-diabetes so that he/she can balance the sugar in his/her diet.

Avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol

Alcohol dehydrates the body and puts pressure on the kidneys, while smoking reduces blood circulation to the kidneys, which can impair kidney function. Therefore, to reduce the risk of kidney disease and improve health, it is important to quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption.
